Comm 229: Re-Representation
I rather liked the idea that the book proposes that the media is a re-representation of real life. In a way it makes the media seem that much better. They really aren't showing what real life is, I mean we all know that but it's hard to get over the fact that they aren't. It's relieving to know that really, truly real life looks nothing like what we see on the television, and that includes the good, the bad and the ugly. Though in a way, it's almost that much worse. The media is a re-representation, and they are striving for a perfection that will never exist. So we are all caught up in this perfection that will never, ever exist. Though, I suppose if the media only showed how the real world actually is no one would watch it. I would guess that that is what the news is for... let you know what's actually going on. Though, if we take OutFoxed into account the news isn't all that reliable either.

Some nice solid points. I completely agree with you on this. When we watch television now a days, we are watching something that seems "real" or "plausible" but in reality, it's only existing in "fantasy land" where anything can happen on television or in the movies. They will never truly depict real life on television because producers will think it's too boring to see what actually goes on in the real world. So instead, they create these supposed "reality" shows when they're not even reality. They are all scripted because the real reality is that they are just trying to sucker us in to achieve good ratings. It's all about the money these days, they really don't care about us. NBC was going to cancel one of my favorite shows.."Chuck" but it had a huge cult following. They didn't seem to care though, because the needed the money. Luckily it got greenlit for another season, but not until March of 2010. Who knows what we'll see in the future of the media. I guess we can hope that someday, we'll find something that is truly real, with nothing fake about it.
