So, I have found difficulties with posting blogs for this class because I pretty much don't watch that much television. Every so often I will get an urge to watch , but I mostly focus on Food Network. But, really and truly my media love is books. So, today I am going to talk about books.
To my horror, I must admit that I am now a fan of the Twilight series. Let's get one thing clear before we move on: I only like the book, the movie is absolute trash and should never have made it to the screen. So, I have only read the first book, waiting with bated breathe for the second one to arrive so I can continue our adventure. But, I was surprised to note one small difference between the book and the moving. The movie follows the book fairly closely, and in the baseball scene one of the bad vampire's is a black man with great dreds. In the book however, during this same exact scene, this black vampire is actually pretty white. I believe he has some color, but is not black.
So, that raises some questions for me of course. Did they change the character color in the movie to fit Affirmative Action? Or did they decide that this actor was better suited for the part. What exactly motivated this decision?? We could get some interesting answers out of this question couldn't we??

All I can say is you cant go wrong with food network
ReplyDeleteI too am a pretty big fan of twilight. Although, not has hardcore as some other people I know. Anyways, I never noticed that difference between the book and the movie. It is interesting to think about though. I wonder if it was even a conscious decision?
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the twilight book, my mother did. However, I did watch the film because it was on resnet. I didn't think it was that bad (I thought the acting was good and the special effects were bad), although I didn't get why people are so obsessed with it.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, I don't think it was affirmative action, although, you could make a fair argument for that case. For instance, Spike Lee dissed Clint Eastwood for having no black soldiers in TWO LETTERS TO JIMA, and NEW YORK I LOVE YOU got dissed by at the movies for not having any gay couples.
However, I think that they chose the African American actor because he fit the role, an attractive young man that has the ability to look angry and menacing. That being said, I find it somewhat curious that Stephanie Meyers would go out of her way to point out the character was white. Was she just trying to point out that characters live in a town where there aren't many african american people? I don't know.
I will admit, I got sucked in by the Twilight series as well. I never noticed the difference between the book and the film with this particular character though. The change with this character could have been an attempt to make the cast more diverse, I guess, or it could have just been because that actor happened to do the best job of becoming the character... Who knows? It could have been done for many different reasons.
