Comm 229: Christmas
Allright, so has anyone noticed the Christmas commercials this year? I never realized how capitalistic we actually were until watching all of these commercials telling people that the best thing to do is buy your kids junk. The best thing about these commercials is that they are not even promoting Christmas at all. Because, in actuality Christmas is not supposed to be about buying each other things, it's about God. I just find all these commercials very interesting, especially since no one can really afford anything right now. Great how the thing to make things perfect is to buy more things that you don't need, and your kids won't really play with three months later?

Yes, and it's not just this year, but every year. And it's not just this holiday, but every holiday. Although, it is especially apparent this time of year. It seems like commerce bombards us with Christmas the day after Halloween. We loose sight of the real meaning of Christmas--just like the Grinch.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the same thing Lauren mentioned. I don't think the commercialization of the holiday is necessarily limited to Christmas. It seems to be this way with every holiday lately. But even so, I see your point. The holidays don't seem as meaningful when they become all about material things.
ReplyDeleteThat's the world we live in. All holidays have beome about the material world and unless we put our foot down and say no, it will only get worse. Often people are forced to work on the holidays because their jobs demand it, and they have no choice. This is why I'm kind of numb to the whole idea of holidays; they just aren't as fun as when you were a kid, especially when you work Christmas Day for the last 4 years.
ReplyDeleteI started recognizing this trend years ago. These days I have a DVR so I fast-foward commericials but when I do see Christmas commericlas I just completely disregard them. I really make a concerted effort to not be advertised to. It's not even the commericials that I inherently have a disdain for. It is the way they try to endear themselves to the viewer by harkening back to the good ole days and family values blah blah blah while at the end of the day they are just trying to take my money.
