Comm 300: Levi Commercials
First of all, let me tell you that I have a love hate relationship with this commercial. I love it because of the voice actor they have doing the whole narrative for the whole commercial. It reminds me of the movie we watched for the Chicano movement. ( of course, I can't remember the name of it now). Then of course, I absolutely hate this commercial because the narrator is talking about the children of the world, being brought up in peace and equality. Yet, there are hardly any minority people in this commercial. There are three black people, two are children, and one of them is an adult. But, there are no Latino's or Asians, or Native Americans, or Indians, or Israeli;s. The vast majority of these people are white... not a really equal place actually..

I completely agree, I have a love hate relationship with the commercial too. I think it would make a better movie scene than a commercial. I see what they are saying, they're saying Levi's are a part of americana, and it doesn't really work how they do it, and the 9000000 caucasians doesn't help.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can remember Levis has always had some interesting commercials. I remember seeing their other "Go Forth" ad, which features Whitman's "Pioneers, O' Pioneers". I enjoy the montage and treatment of images. I feel like the form of these ads take precedence over the content.
ReplyDeletep.s. the clip we watched was "I am Joaquin".
I think you are right in the fact that here they are talking about peace and equality in the commercial, but they only have whites in it. If you want equality you need more than one race of people, more than one outlook on this world. I mean why talk about something like peace or equality if you are going to just shut out everyone else in the world?
ReplyDeleteI agree that if they are going to talk equality, they should be a little more equal. But what does equality even have to do with jeans?? Maybe the whole Americana thing like someone else said but its kind of a stretch. If the word LEVI wasn't at the end of the commercial would anyone even know what it was for? I just think their kind of weird.
ReplyDeleteOn an episode of Seinfeld, there was a lively discussion about Levi commercials. Jerry got into a fight with his girlfriend when he was annoyed that she like the commericial in which they didn't discuss the jeans. I agree with Jerry it annoyed me that they advertise a product but don't actually talk about it. As far as this commercial goes I've heard it's actually gotten a lot of attention. I think that is exactly what Levi's has smart about with their promotional campaigns, love or hate them they are conversation starters, and that is exactly what is so good about them. They get people to say the name of the product over and over, smart marketing.
ReplyDeleteI have never noticed that before. I will have to watch for it next time I see the commercial.
