I was sooo excited to see this movie. It was my favorite book growing up, except for If You Give A Moose A Muffin, of course. And I decided that I was going to treat myself and my grandma and have a wonderful outing. Everything went great... until the movie.
To be honest, I have never been more disappointed in a 'children's' movie than I have with this one. I'll be honest some kid focused movies are junk, but this one topped it all. All I can figure is that something went wrong with the script. Some one threw junk on the page, and some producer ate it up!!! It's probably down to the fact that the screenwriter had to make up a plot, because there really wasn't all that much to work with from the book. But, man... not even the little kids in the theatre would sit down for it. If I hadn't had my grammy with me I would have walked.
I won't spoil anything for anyone reading this, because who knows you might just like it. But, in all honesty, I would recommend waiting until it comes out on the Redbox before you watch it. It really isn't worth the 7.50 you have to pay for the ticket.

I agree with you. I remember this book fondly from my childhood but the movie didn't hold the same sentiments for me. To be fair this is a hard book to adapt into a movie being that it is only about 15 pages long. I thought the movie was a bit "much" in its attempt as it seem to being trying to hard to have that Spike Jonze (the director) look to it. I felt the story was sort of thrown together and too much focus was on the look of it. I guess what I am trying to say that while I was in the theater I found it really hard to care about what I was watching.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's different than the other opinions I heard. Most of the critics praised the film for avoiding mainstream audiences as in films such as Shrek. Now I'm torn and don't know if I should watch it or not haha.
ReplyDeleteim not familar with this book or movie but i feel like a lot of kid movies are too innocent and non-constroversial. dont get me wrong i love movies like shrek but remember looney tunes with the coyote getting blown up by acme tnt. i feel like those days are over because its too violent. personally i think that stuff is fine
ReplyDelete"Where the Wild Things Are" was also a favorite book of mine! I haven't seen the movie so I am now reluctant to see it, though I was reluctant from the get go because I wasn't sure what they were going to do for a plot. Thank you for your honest review! Isn't it strange that movies for beloved childhood books often end up doing terribly? When Mike Meyers was found to be playing the cat in "The Cat in the Hat," everyone was super excited to go see it, but it ended up not doing well at all and received a lot of negative reviews. Maybe our imaginations and various expectations as children for these beloved stories ruin the probability of a director of ever making a perfect movie. Either way, I'm probably going to stick to the books and pray to God that they never try to make a movie out of "The Very Hungry Catapillar."
ReplyDeletei heard it was good! NPR spoke of it fondly, but they were mostly talking about the visual element. even if you hate the movie, pick up the soundtrack by karen o and the kids, its amazing and i've been playing it on WBIM as well.
ReplyDeleteI was never a big fan of the book, unlike just about everyone else. I was wondering how they were going to make a movie out of a book with very little text.
ReplyDeleteIT's nice to see a little first person honesty with films. I find that when you read the critic reviews these days anyone can by a catch line that talks about how great a film is. It is unfortunate that the critical review these days are faling so far of the mark. Thanks for the honesty, I guess I'll just stick it on the Netflix queue.
ReplyDelete$7.50 for the ticket?? I just paid $24 for two tickets to 2012 at Patriots Place for tomorrow night. Hopefully it will be more worthwhile then this movie was apparently. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI figured since there was only about 10 words in the whole book, that there wasnt going to be enough plot to make a 90 min film. I mean they probably should of thought of that
ReplyDeleteI loved that book as a kid and based on all of the great reviews from critics that have been plastered all over television, it seemed like a pretty good movie, but it is always good to hear honest opinions from people actually paying to see the movie. Seeing as the book was so short, it makes sense that the story was probably difficult to stretch into a decent, full length film. I think I'll wait and rent it when it comes out on DVD.
ReplyDeleteI havn't heard any reviews of this until now but I am still deffinitely going to see this. I usually like movies where they steer away from the mainstream and from the previews this movie looked pretty different. I also loved this book as a kid, probably only second to the giving tree, now thats a movie idea..
ReplyDeleteThat was my favorite movie growing up too; I can't wait to see the movie.
