Allright, so I'm watching Transporter 2, and that got me thinking about how many action heroes aren't white. And honestly, I can't think of very many. Of course, the first one that comes to mind is Blade but he's not really an action hero, I don't think that being a half vampire, killing machine really counts in this catagory. It's a great movie, but it's not a role that could happen in real life, unlike the Transporter, there could be some guy somewhere working for the mafia dropping packages off. There probably really is.Though, I would have to argue that Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp fiction was a pretty awesome character, but wouldn't really categorize him as a hero.
Now of course I tend to focus on African Americans, because they are the first minorities that come to mind. But what about Asian good guys? Is Jackie Chan really the only one? Some of his original movies made in China are really awesome, but there aren't that many Chinese heroes in Hollywood films, that focus upon an action theme. I wonder how different Star Wars or Indian Jones would be if they had a minority as the main character...

the only movie that come to mind was "hancock" starring will smith but i never seen it but wasn't he a superhero in that movie? but i def see what your saying there's certainly not many at all
ReplyDeleteWill Smith is the hero in all his movies. =] Maybe there just aren't as many "MegaStar Actors" out there who are minorities. Because Denzel is almost always a good guy as well. Minorities really haven't been big stars for long. Like, the 90s is when we really start seeing minorities taking leads in movies... that's not that long ago.
ReplyDeleteNever thought about action heroes like that before. My favorite action star is actually Jason Statham from the movie Transporter that inspired you to write this. I guess there are a few African American action heroes but certainly there are not many.
ReplyDeleteYa I love Will Smith and Denzel and i would have to say they play the hero in a lot of their movies. But other than them i think you are right there are not that many African American hero in movies. I would also have to agree that Samuel Jackson's Character in Pulp Fiction is a awesome character.
ReplyDeleteYeah any movie that has denzel or will smith as the lead is generally an action movie, even though they arnt always super hereos, any one who hasnt should watch john q or man on fire from denzel, those two characters are hereos to me
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know how many comic book artist are black. I will submit that most heroes are white but I really don't have a clue about the authors ethnicity. I'd be willing to assume that there must be black comic book artists out there. Of those artists I wonder what type of characters they draw and the types of ethnicity they are. I think this would be an interesting area to investigate a little further.
